Zrmanja River (4)

WORD

  • Home

Zrmanja, also known as Zermagna in Italian, is a river flowing through southern Lika and northern Dalmatia, Croatia. Stretching over 69 km (43 mi) in length, it covers a basin area of 907 km2 (350 sq mi). The river was referred to as Tedanius by the ancient Romans. Originating from the southern part of Lika beneath Postak, the southern peak of Pljesevica mountain, and near the southern end of Velebit mountain, Zrmanja is distinguished by its spring situated at the base of a nearly 200 m high funnel-shaped rock known as Misije. It flows southward through a narrow, arable valley encircling the southern tip of Velebit, carving a 200-meter-deep canyon, before turning westward towards Obrovac. Eventually, it empties into the Adriatic Sea in the bay named Novigradsko more. In the 1990s, the Velebit area was designated as a nature park. Rafting excursions on Zrmanja are typically conducted in spring and autumn, while kayaks and canoes are preferred during the low water levels of July and August. However, in December 2019, the river faced an ecological crisis when waste from a former alumina plant contaminated the karst underground, resulting in the release of alkaline mud. This waste had been stored in open pools since the plant's closure.

The Miljacka slap waterfall, situated 21.5 km from the river source, marks the fifth waterfall along the Krka's course. Standing at 23.8 m tall and 50-60 m wide, it's a striking sight where the Zrmanja River merges with the Krka. This convergence, known as the Miljacka spring, is a rare hydrogeological phenomenon. The waterfall boasts a unique landscape with high cliffs, ridges, and overhangs, surrounded by lush sub-Mediterranean vegetation. It hosts diverse moss species and serves as a habitat for various subterranean animals, including the olm and long-fingered bat. Adjacent to the waterfall is the HPP Miljacka, Europe's most powerful hydroelectric plant until 1910.

Jankovića buk, the last waterfall on the Zrmanja River, stands approximately 3 meters tall. Formerly hosting vital water mills, now reduced to ruins, the site is renowned among locals. Positioned where freshwater converges with seawater, the habitat supports diverse aquatic life. Located an hour inland from Zadar, Jankovića Buk can be reached by a scenic walk along the Zrmanja River from Obrovac, culminating as the final waterfall before the river meets the coast.

Slapovi Krupe, a picturesque waterfall near Krupa Monastery in Dalmatia, Croatia, is nestled within a stunning canyon along the Krupa River, a tributary of the Zrmanja River. While there are no specific signs leading to the waterfall, visitors can access it via a trail near the Kuda’s Bridge. Enjoying the tranquility of this serene spot requires a 60-minute drive from Zadar, followed by a brief hike. Alternatively, travelers can utilize the parking lot in Golubić on the north side of the river for easy access.

Berberov Buk, also known as Vodopad Zrmanja or the Waterfalls of Zrmanja River, is not your typical waterfall. Unlike conventional waterfalls formed by erosion, Berberov Buk features a unique ledge created by tufa, a type of limestone precipitated from karst water rich in limestone. This growing rock formation gives rise to rimstone pools, interspersed with small caves known as primary tufa caves, forming a spectacular rim across the river. Situated in the Muškovci hamlet within Park prirode Velebit (Nature Park Velebit), Berberov Buk stands out as the most remarkable among numerous rims and waterfalls along the Zrmanja River. The site boasts tourist infrastructure, including parking lots, restaurants, cafés, bungalows, beaches, and a 1 km trail along the waterfalls, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking natural beauty and adventure.
