WORD
The Yellow Sea, a marginal sea within the Western Pacific Ocean, sits between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula, essentially forming the northwestern segment of the East China Sea. This sea is one of four seas bearing names derived from colors (the others being the Black Sea, the Red Sea, and the White Sea), its name reflecting the golden-yellow hue stemming from sediment-filled waters discharged by major rivers. Towards the innermost bay of the northwestern Yellow Sea lies the Bohai Sea (formerly Gulf of Zhili / Beizhili), where significant rivers from northern China, like the Yellow River (passing through Shandong province and its capital Jinan), the Hai River (flowing through Beijing and Tianjin), and the Liao River (meandering through Liaoning province), converge. The northeastern extension of the Yellow Sea is known as the Korea Bay, where the Yalu River, the Chongchon River, and the Taedong River discharge. Starting November 1, 2018, the Yellow Sea has also been designated as the site for "peace zones" facilitating diplomatic efforts between North and South Korea.
