WORD
Vlach, also known as Wallachian and under various other variants, has historically denoted speakers of Eastern Romance languages residing in Southeast Europe, situated south of the Danube (the Balkan peninsula) and north of the Danube. While it has been applied to present-day Romanians, the term "Vlach" primarily signifies speakers of Eastern Romance languages living south of the Danube, including those in Albania, Bulgaria, northern Greece, North Macedonia, and eastern Serbia. This encompasses ethnic groups such as the Aromanians, the Megleno-Romanians, and the Timok Romanians in Serbia. Additionally, the term has been synonymous with the social category of shepherds in the Balkans and has derogatorily referenced non-Romance-speaking peoples in the western Balkans in recent times. It is also associated with ethnographic groups like the Moravian Vlachs, Morlachs, and Istro-Romanians, who may speak Slavic languages but have Romanian origins. Presently, Eastern Romance-speaking communities globally are estimated to comprise 26–30 million people, encompassing the Romanian and Moldovan diasporas.
