Turan (1)

WORD

  • Home

Turan refers to a series of signaling towers that were prevalent along the Istria coast. These towers, originating in the Roman Empire era and extensively utilized during the Venice Republic's rule, were dedicated to enabling communication networks. Using fires at night and smoke signals during daylight hours, they transmitted messages to other towers within their visual range. Essentially, Turan towers were pivotal in facilitating communication among themselves and with vessels navigating the coast during the night. Placed strategically in a network configuration, each tower had a clear line of sight and communication with neighboring towers, establishing an interconnected system intended to improve visibility and messaging efficiency.

The small country chapel, known as Italian: St. Giovanni Battista or Croatian: Sv. Ivan, dating back to the 14th or 15th century, stands approximately 100 meters north of the Turan. Originally part of the Abbey sharing the same name, the chapel was associated with a two-story house. Behind it was a separate building with rooms designated for each friar. By the mid-16th century, the Abbey was abandoned. The house was then occupied by a farmer-worker (colonist) responsible for managing the church's property. As the noble class disintegrated, the colonist farmer eventually assumed possession of the property.
