Taegeuk (1)

WORD

  • Home

Taegeuk (Korean: 태극) is a Korean term cognate with the Chinese term Taiji (Wade-Giles spelling: T'ai-chi), meaning "supreme ultimate", although it can also be translated as "great polarity / duality". The symbol was chosen for the design of the Korean national flag in the 1880s. The Taegeuk diagram has been existent for the majority of written Korean history. The origins of the interlocking-sinusoid design in Korea can be traced to as early as the Goguryeo or Silla period, e.g. in the decoration of a sword, dated to the 5th or 6th century, recovered from the grave of Michu of Silla, or an artifact with the taegeuk pattern of similar age found in the Bogam-ri tombs of Baekje at Naju, South Jeolla Province in 2008.

This stupa is said to have been made in 1692 to enshrine a relic of the Buddha discovered at Hongnyeongam Hermitage in 1683. According to the record inscribed on the stele at the entrance to the hermitage, the Avalokitesvara statue enshrined in the hermitage was undergoing a regilding procedure when the presence of an auspicious energy was suddenly felt and a relic of the Buddha fell from the wooden canopy above the statue. This stupa was later made to enshrine the relic. After the stupa was damaged by the forest fire of 2005, it underwent a restoration, during which it was confirmed that it indeed enshrined a reliquary containing 37 artifacts, including a bronze lidded bowl, cloth wrap, silver lidded bowl, gold lidded bowl. The stupa consists of an octagonal base, a round body stone, and an octagonal roof stone. It is decorated with elaborate carvings, such as a taegeuk pattern, Sanskrit letters, lotus flower designs, circular designs, and other geometrical patterns. In 2011, this stupa was designated as Treasure No. 1723 together with the enshrined reliquaries and the stele, due to their great value in the understanding of the Buddhist culture of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
