Setos (Seto: setokõsõq, setoq, Estonian: setukesed, setud) are an indigenous Finnic ethnic and linguistic minority in south-eastern Estonia and north-western Russia. Setos are mostly Seto-speaking Orthodox Christians of Estonian nationality. The Seto language (like Estonian and Finnish) belongs to the Finnic group of the Uralic languages. The Setos seek greater recognition, rather than having their language considered a dialect of Estonian. Along with Orthodox Christianity, vernacular traditional folk religion is widely practiced and supported by Setos. There are approximately 15,000 Setos around the world. The bulk of Setos, however, are found in the Setomaa region, which is divided between south-eastern Estonia (Põlva and Võro counties) and the north-western Russian Federation (Pechorsky District of Pskov Oblast). Setos are an officially protected ethnic minority of Pskov Oblast.

Värska, the biggest settlement of Setomaa in Estonia, is located on the shores of Lake Pskov. The small town has been inhabited for about 5000 years. Värska used to be an important port until World War II. From the 16th century on the lands around Värska belonged to the Pechory Monastery. Already at that time there was a little wooden church at Värska. The Orthodox congregation was founded here in 1759, and a bigger wooden church dedicated to St. George was built the same year. The church was dismantled in 1907, when a new church, made of stones and bricks, was completed in Värska. The interior of the church is noteworthy for its iconostasis, which includes a wooden icon from the 17th century and depicts St. George, the patron saint of the church. The feast day of the Värska church and the town is St. George's Day held on 6 May - the Setos celebrate their church holidays according to the old Julian calendar. In the morning, a ceremony is held in the church, followed by a procession around the church. That is followed by the traditional village party (kirmas) held at the swing grounds by the central crossroad. The St. George's Day kirmas is one of the most popular village parties in Setomaa. People sing old songs and dance traditional dances and play instruments, and everyone can join in dancing and singing. Sometimes there is singing and dancing at the same time, at different spots, so that the different groups won't interfere with each other. There is a cemetery around the church. There are numerous famous people buried here, such as Ivan Fjodoroff, the captain of the cruiser 'Aurora', and Anne Vabarna, a famous singer from Setomaa. Anne Vabarna (1877-1964) was one of the best improvisers of seto leelo, the Seto way of singing, where improvisation plays a very important role. More than 150,000 verses have been recorded from her. She is also the author of the Seto epic Peko, which she dictated to her son, as she was illiterate, like most of the Seto women of her time.

The Värska farm museum was founded by a couple of local women. These women knew how to dream big. They figured a sports stadium would be a perfect place for the future museum! Yes, the museum is founded on the former sports field of the Northern camp. All the buildings that make up the farmstead have been collected from different villages of Setomaa and rebuilt on the spot or constructed following the old models. It makes up a wholesome farmstead that gives a good idea what a 1920's wealthy farmstead looked like. The wealth is revealed in a rather large courtyard, three barns and a big animal shed that is spacious enough for cows and horses - all these indicate notable wealth in a traditional Seto household. The Värska farm museum is a living farm where there are chickens, rabbits, and horses, as well as a dog and cat on the farm. In the wintertime the big oven is heated and sometimes even a meal or some buns are baked in the oven. There are seasonal exhibitions in the dwelling house and in the barns. The threshing house becomes a big handicraft store in the summertime. On the field between the farm and Tsaimaja you can see a smithery and a pottery house. Different thematic days are organized in the museum, and folk calendar events are celebrated here as well. In the summer, concerts of Seto leelo are organized in the museums of Setomaa. Tsaimaja (Tea house), built in 2004, serves a variety of traditional Seto cuisine. It is a place equally attractive for both locals and guests. You can enjoy the local homemade pressed cottage cheese (sair), cold soup (suulliim), open pies (piirak), oven baked casseroles, pancakes etc.
