During the night of December 10, 2021, insurgents carried out an assault on Kiwengulo, a village located in Tanzania’s Mtwara region, situated just across the Ruvuma River from the Pundanhar area in the western part of Palma district. In this attack, insurgents ruthlessly killed four civilians: beheading three individuals from the same family, ransacking their home, and subsequently shooting another young man to death. The assailants attempted to force locals to guide them to the residences of village officials, but their actions were disrupted by the arrival of Tanzanian military forces. A confrontation ensued, resulting in the death of five insurgents and the destruction of one Tanzanian army vehicle.

On the 1st of October, 2021, a group of 12 insurgents infiltrated the Tanzanian village of Kiwengulo, situated near the Ruvuma river, adjacent to the western Palma district. The insurgents ransacked food stocks and tragically took the life of a civilian woman who recognized one of them as a local resident. Despite efforts, Tanzanian security forces were unable to capture the insurgents.

In the events that took place in the village of Kitaya on October 14th, 2020, over 300 Daesh/ISIS terrorists infiltrated from northern Mozambique and attacked civilians in Tanzania's southern Mtwara region. At least 20 civilians were killed, and the attackers damaged properties, leading many people to flee their homes. A disturbing video on social media depicted the terrorists beheading a man, believed to be Tanzanian, while one of them stated in Kiswahili that their actions were unrelated to Tanzania's upcoming general elections scheduled for October 28. The attackers entered Tanzania via the Ruvuma River and targeted Kitaya village, which is situated on the border with Mozambique's troubled Cabo Delgado province. While some terrorists were arrested, others managed to escape. Tanzanian police and security forces initiated a manhunt for those who fled back to Mozambique, vowing to bring them to justice and defeat the network of terrorists comprising Tanzanians and Mozambicans.
