WORD
The Lieven Family (Līveni in Latvian, Ливен in Russian, Liewen in Swedish) stands as one of the most ancient and esteemed lineages of Baltic German and Nordic origins. Their lineage traces back to Caupo of Turaida (Kaupo in Latvian), the Livonian quasi rex who embraced Christianity in 1186, during Bishop Meinhard's efforts to Christianize the area. As documented in the Livonian Chronicle of Henry, Caupo journeyed to Rome in 1203–1204 with Theoderich von Treyden, a Cistercian Monk and eventual founder of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and Estonia's first bishop. Pope Innocent III in Rome supported their Christianization endeavors, ennobling Caupo and granting him a coat of arms. Caupo's grandson, Nicholas, was the first to adopt the name Lieven. Feudal records indicate that Gerardus Līvo (1269) and his son Johannes (1296) served as vassals to the Archbishop of Rīga, according to historical documents. Additionally, one of Caupo's daughters married an ancestor of the Ungern-Sternberg barons, later Counts.
