Lake Peipus (Estonian: Peipsi-Pihkva järv; Russian: Чудско-Псковское озеро, Псковско-Чудское озеро, romanized: Chudsko-Pskovskoye ozero, Pskovsko-Chudskoye ozero); is the largest trans-boundary lake in Europe, lying on the border between Estonia and Russia. The lake is the fifth-largest in Europe after Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega (in Russia north of Saint Petersburg), Lake Vänern (in Sweden), and Lake Saimaa (in Finland).

The Värska Bay is a picturesque fjord-like bay. In the middle of the bay there is a deep former riverbed, which is about 20m wide. The flood that followed the last Ice Age filled the whole valley with water, forming a bay. The old riverbed is now filled with lake mud and peat. Later the water level has fluctuated up and down. Currently the water level is rising again, because of the natural land uplift in North-West Estonia that causes the waters of Lake Pskov to flow southwards. The water is mostly shallow, only 1-2 m deep. The fish fauna is very interesting, especially since it changes a lot over the years. The bay is quite rich in asp (Leuciscus aspius), which is a protected species. In spring many fish species living in Lake Pskov-Peipus, such as bream, roach, pike and bleak, come to spawn in the bay. The bream comes to spawn at different times. Some arrive already in the beginning of May, others in the middle and at the end of May. The breams spawning in Värska Bay and Lake Orsava are very committed to their spawning grounds: they come back to the exact grounds every year. Bream, pike and roach have held and still hold very important roles in the diet of lakeside Setos. The bream is smoked, roach and pike are salted and dried outdoors. Pike-perch, perch and ruffe are also valued in Seto cuisine. In fact, the Setos consider ruffe as the tastiest species for making fish bouillon. The bird fauna includes gulls, terns and mute swans. One of the most common species of reed beds is the great crested grebe. Cormorants and great white herons are increasingly numerous. White-tailed eagles are rather common as well.

Värska, the biggest settlement of Setomaa in Estonia, is located on the shores of Lake Pskov. The small town has been inhabited for about 5000 years. Värska used to be an important port until World War II. From the 16th century on the lands around Värska belonged to the Pechory Monastery. Already at that time there was a little wooden church at Värska. The Orthodox congregation was founded here in 1759, and a bigger wooden church dedicated to St. George was built the same year. The church was dismantled in 1907, when a new church, made of stones and bricks, was completed in Värska. The interior of the church is noteworthy for its iconostasis, which includes a wooden icon from the 17th century and depicts St. George, the patron saint of the church. The feast day of the Värska church and the town is St. George's Day held on 6 May - the Setos celebrate their church holidays according to the old Julian calendar. In the morning, a ceremony is held in the church, followed by a procession around the church. That is followed by the traditional village party (kirmas) held at the swing grounds by the central crossroad. The St. George's Day kirmas is one of the most popular village parties in Setomaa. People sing old songs and dance traditional dances and play instruments, and everyone can join in dancing and singing. Sometimes there is singing and dancing at the same time, at different spots, so that the different groups won't interfere with each other. There is a cemetery around the church. There are numerous famous people buried here, such as Ivan Fjodoroff, the captain of the cruiser 'Aurora', and Anne Vabarna, a famous singer from Setomaa. Anne Vabarna (1877-1964) was one of the best improvisers of seto leelo, the Seto way of singing, where improvisation plays a very important role. More than 150,000 verses have been recorded from her. She is also the author of the Seto epic Peko, which she dictated to her son, as she was illiterate, like most of the Seto women of her time.
