The Kootenays or Kootenay is a region of southeastern British Columbia. It takes its name from the Kootenay River, which in turn was named for the Kutenai First Nations people.

Film footage believed to be from the 1930s shows the S.S. Sicamous, a five-level ship, that had 30 cabins, which stopped running in 1936. The footage of the steamship is part of a collection of film and photos that were found over 10 years ago at a private residence in the Kootenays. They came into the possession of the Okanagan Archive Trust Society who are in the process of preserving and digitizing the works. The footage of the steamship was done by Louis and Rudolph Pop, brothers from a privileged Vancouver family that worked as furriers and taxidermists, and travelled to different parts of British Columbia to hunt for big game. The process to digitize old photos and film is challenging and can take years. The society has been working with Lifetime Heritage Films on the process.
