WORD
The Julian Alps, referred to as Julijske Alpe in Slovene, Alpi Giulie in Italian, Alpe Jułie in Venetian, Alps Juliis in Friulian, and Julische Alpen in German, constitute a range within the Southern Limestone Alps. They extend from northeastern Italy into Slovenia, reaching a height of 2,864 meters at Mount Triglav, Slovenia's tallest summit. Much of the Julian Alps is encompassed by Triglav National Park. The range's second highest peak, Jôf di Montasio at 2,755 meters, is located in Italy. Covering around 4,400 square kilometers (with 1,542 square kilometers in Italy), the Julian Alps occupy the area between the Sava Valley and Canale Valley. They are categorized into the Eastern and Western Julian Alps. In ancient times, the Julian Alps were known as Alpe Iulia, and variations like Alpes Juliana (around AD 670), Alpis Julia (around 734), and Alpes Iulias (in 1090) have been recorded. Similar to the town of Forum Julii (now Cividale del Friuli) situated at the mountains' base, the range's name stems from Julius Caesar of the Julian clan, possibly due to a road initiated by Julius Caesar and completed by Augustus.
