WORD

Is a religious work of art, most commonly a painting, in the cultures of the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, the Roman Catholic, and certain Eastern Catholic churches. They are not simply artworks; "an icon is a sacred image used in religious devotion". The most common subjects include Christ, Mary, saints and angels. Although especially associated with portrait-style images concentrating on one or two main figures, the term also covers most religious images in a variety of artistic media produced by Eastern Christianity, including narrative scenes, usually from the Bible or the lives of saints.

The cupola in the Orthodox Churches symbolizes the wide sky created by God for the humanity.Relics of Saints Gorazd and AngelariosAccording to the century-old tradition of the Christian Church and the available resources, Saints Gorazd and Angelarios, disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius, were missionaries in Albania during the Bulgarian occupation, in the 9th and 10th centuries AD. It is believed that their relics went from the Monastery of St Mary in Ballsh in Gllavenica, in Berat's Mitropolis during the Ottoman conquests, first to the Monastery of Saint George in Mbreshtan and later to the Dormition of St Mary Cathedral where they are still preserved, inside their ark.

The date preserved on the door of the nave indicates that the church was rebuilt in 1797. This is one of the most representative monuments of Byzantine architecture in the city. It is a three-naved basilica covered with arches and domes. The nave floor is paved with stone slabs, and in the center there is a solar mosaic and calendar which provides a visual chart of the Christian cosmos. Dating back to 1806 the iconostasis, carved from wood and is covered in gold leaf, remains in good condition. The altar area, on the east, preserves parts from the original fresco. In this cathedral, the two famous Codexes of Berat were hidden. Currently, the Cathedral houses the 'Onufri' National Iconographic Museum where some of the most famous icons of Albanian artists have been collected from different churches in Berat and are in this museum.

Built to a design by Nikolai Chagin and Robert Pflug in a Neo-Byzantine style between 1876 and 1883, with decorations made by the firm of August Volz, during the period when the country was part of the Russian Empire. It is the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic provinces built with the blessing of the Russian Tsar Alexander II on the initiative of local governor-general Pyotr Bagration and bishop Veniamin Karelin. The Nativity of Christ Cathedral is renowned for its icons, some of which were painted by Vasili Vereshchagin. During the First World War German troops occupied Riga and turned its largest Russian Orthodox cathedral into a Lutheran church.
