In July 1939, the Gyeongchun Line train, a long-cherished desire of the local residents, began to run. In the 1920s, railway transportation led the rapid development in cities with provincial governments, such as Daejeon and Daegu. However, Chuncheon, where the Gangwon Provincial Government was located, failed to install railways due to rough mountains. Hence, local influentials in Chuncheon set out to build the railroad and eventually established the Gyeongchun Railroad Corporation. The Gyeongchun Line was completed after about four years of construction. The operation was so successful that it did not require subsidies from the Governor General of Korea in five years. Chuncheon Station was reconstructed in 2010 due to the double-track construction on the Gyeongchun Line, and a new station that visualized Soyanggang Dam in the facade welcomes the visitors. Chuncheon crumbled into ruins due to the Korean War in 1950. However, it was reborn as the main water supply source of the metropolitan area, as Chuncheon Dam was built in 1965, which was followed by the construction of Uiam Dam, and Soyanggang Dam. The development restriction for clean water played a major role in preserving the clean environment, making Chuncheon a lakeside city visited by people frustrated with the rapid industrialization. Soyanggang Skywalk and Miss Soyanggang River Statue welcome visitors along the Soyanggang River, and Makguksu (spicy buckwheat noodles) and Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) fulfill their appetite. One can enjoy the panorama and night view of Chuncheon, the city of lake, from Gubongsan Cafe Street.
