Gojoseon (1)

WORD

  • Home

Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, was founded by the legendary king Dangun. It marked an advanced culture on the Korean Peninsula, paving the way for later centralized states. The 'Go' (ancient) prefix distinguishes it from the Joseon dynasty established in 1392 CE. According to legend, Dangun, born from Hwanung and Ungnyeo, established Gojoseon in 2333 BCE. Though Dangun's existence lacks concrete evidence, his legend influences Korean identity. Gojoseon's founding date is celebrated as National Foundation Day in North and South Korea. In the 12th century BCE, Jizi or Gija, a Shang dynasty sage, is believed to have founded Gija Joseon, sparking debates about its existence. Gojoseon's ruling dynasty fell in 194 BCE to Wi Man, leading to Wiman Joseon. In 108 BCE, Han dynasty's Emperor Wu conquered Wiman Joseon, administering the territory through four commanderies. After Goguryeo's conquest in 313 CE, Gojoseon's capital moved to Wanggeom (modern Pyongyang), while the Jin state emerged in the southern Korean Peninsula by the 3rd century BCE.

The Mausoleum of Tangun, located in Kangdong near Pyongyang, North Korea, is believed to be the burial site of Tangun, the legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom. A pyramid with 1994 stone blocks was constructed atop the grave in 1994. The complex covers approximately 1.8 km² (0.70 mi²) on Mount Taebak's slope and comprises restoration work areas, stone statue sections, and the burial site. Dangun's grave resembles a step pyramid, standing about 22 m (72 ft) high and 50 m (164 ft) on each side. According to North Korean claims, Gojoseon was founded around 2333 BCE, but recent excavations suggest an even earlier origin of approximately 3000 BCE, making the site around 5011 years old as of 1993. North Korean leader Kim Il Sung advocated for Dangun's historical existence, leading to archaeological efforts to locate his remains and grave. In 1993, North Korean academia reported the discovery of 86 human bone remains, dating back over 5011 years, supporting the claim.
