WORD

  • Home

The United East India Company (Dutch: Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the VOC) was a chartered company established on the 20th March 1602 by the States General of the Netherlands amalgamating existing companies into the first joint-stock company in the world, granting it a 21-year monopoly to carry out trade activities in Asia. Shares in the company could be bought by any resident of the United Provinces and then subsequently bought and sold in open-air secondary markets (one of which became the Amsterdam Stock Exchange). It is sometimes considered to have been the first multinational corporation. It was a powerful company, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, strike its own coins, and establish colonies. They are also known for their international slave trade.

Hamel Museum was built on the historic site where Hamel and his crewmates stayed before leaving for their homeland. The museum will provide information on their trails of life from the shipwreck on Jeju island to their stay in Yeosu for three and a half years. The main purpose of the museum is to promote friendship between Yeosu city and the Netherlands, witness Korea and the world in the 17th century and reflect the past and present for a better future. Hendrick Hamel was born in Gorinchem, the Netherlands, in 1630. He became a sailor for the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) at the age 20 in 1650. In 1653, while heading for Dejima (Nagasaki), Japan, from Vatavia (Jakarta) on the ship 'De Sperwer' as a bookkeeper, he was shipwrecked after a windstorm on Jeju Island off the southern coast of Korea. He gave the first detailed and accurate description of Korea to Europe as he wrote and experienced for 13 years 28 days first-hand in the Joseon dynasty before leaving Jeolla Left Naval Command, Yeosu, on September 4, 1666. Better known as 'The Record of Hamel's Shipwreck' in Korea, 'The Journal of Hendrick Hamel' was a kind of an inside report to be submitted to the Dutch East India Company to demand for wages unpaid during imprisonment. The report was soon published in different languages such as French, English and German to reveal for the first time the unknown country of Corea (Joseon dynasty) to Europe. Exhibition Room 1: Reminiscence - It reminisces about the seaman Hendrick Hamel who left Yeosu around 350 years ago for his home, the Netherlands. Exhibition Room 2: Journey to Past - The two worlds did not know each other's presence in the 17th century and the seaman Hendrick Hamel departed for the future. Exhibition Room 3: Dream Comes True - After 13 years 28 days in Joseon, the seaman Hendrick Hamel left Yeosu to achieve his dream of returning to hometown. Exhibition Room 4: Vision - It allows us to witness Joseon in the 17th century through Hamel's eyes and, reflecting on our past and present, proposes a vision of Yeosu. one of the world's four most scenic harbour cities, in the 21st century.
