Duchy of Carinthia (1)

WORD

  • Home

The Duchy of Carinthia, known as Herzogtum Kärnten in German and Vojvodina Koroška in Slovene, encompassed parts of southern Austria and northern Slovenia. Established in 976 following its separation from the Duchy of Bavaria, it became the first newly formed Imperial State after the original German stem duchies. Carinthia retained its status as a Holy Roman Empire State until its dissolution in 1806. From 1335, it fell under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty within the Austrian dominions. This continued through its time as a constituent part of the Habsburg monarchy and the Austrian Empire, eventually becoming a crown land of Austria-Hungary until 1918. Following the Carinthian Plebiscite in October 1920, the primary region of the duchy was incorporated into the Austrian state of Carinthia.

Lake Predil, also known as Lago del Predil in Italian, Lât di Rabil in Friulian, Raibler See in German, and Rabeljsko jezero in Slovene, is situated near Cave del Predil, within the Tarvisio municipality of the Udine Province in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. This lake rests at an elevation of 969 meters (3,179 feet) in a high valley of the Julian Alps, north of Sella Nevea. Adjacent to the Predil Pass road leading to the Slovenian border, it is the second largest natural lake in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, covering approximately 1 square kilometer (0.39 square miles), surpassed only by Lago di Cavazzo. Renowned for its scenic location beneath the Kanin massif, Lake Predil attracts hikers and day trippers as a favored tourist spot. Historically, it marked the southern border between the Imperial Duchy of Carinthia and the Venetian Domini di Terraferma, aligning with the nearby mountain ridges of Predil Pass and Sella Nevea. Following the cession of Venetian territory to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, the Austro-Hungarian Army constructed a fortress along the lakeside between 1885 and 1887, aimed at safeguarding the road to Tarvisio. During World War I, the fort suffered significant damage due to the Battles of the Isonzo on the Italian Front. Some ruins of the fortress are still preserved and accessible for public viewing.
