The Donghak Peasant Revolution (Korean: 동학 농민 혁명), also known as the Donghak Peasant Movement (동학 농민 운동), Donghak Rebellion, Peasant Revolt of 1894, Gabo Peasant Revolution, and a variety of other names, was an armed rebellion in Korea led by peasants and followers of the Donghak religion, a pantheistic religion viewed by many rebels as a political ideology.

This is the site of the provincial office of Jeolla-do Province during the Joseon dynasty (1392 - 1910). Jeolla-do at the time included today's Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do Provinces, as well as Jejudo Island. The provincial office of Jeolla-do originally consisted of 40 buildings including the main gate, the governor's office, residential buildings, and a pavilion. It was the headquarters of the administration work for the Jeolla-do area. In 1894, when the Donghak Peasant Uprising began, the headquarters for the peasant armies' network of autonomous directorates was located here. Following administrative district reforms, it was no longer used as the Jeolla-do provincial office from 1896 onwards. Most of the buildings were destroyed during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The governor's office, which was the last building remaining, was burnt down in 1951 in an accidental explosion. Since 2017, reconstructions have begun to restore the governor's office, residential buildings, and the pavilion.
