Dinaric Alps (1)

WORD

  • Home

The Dinaric Alps, also known as the Dinarides, are a mountain range in Southern and Southcentral Europe, stretching approximately 645 kilometers from Italy to Albania. They separate the Balkan Peninsula from the Adriatic Sea and pass through several countries, including Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia. The range includes the Accursed Mountains, the highest section, with Maja Jezercë in Albania being the tallest peak at 2,694 meters. Formed primarily of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, the Dinaric Alps are part of an active tectonic region shaped by the collision of the Adriatic Microplate with Europe.

Vjetrenica Cave, the largest and most biodiverse cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in July. Nestled in the Popovo field in Ravno, East Herzegovina, within the Dinaric Alps mountain range, this 'wind cave' or 'blowhole' has fascinated people since ancient times, including the Greeks who were drawn to its unique features and cool breezes. The cave, renowned for its karstic and speleological wonders, has yielded remarkable discoveries, including the remains of a prehistoric cave bear and a leopard species. Today, over 200 life forms continue to thrive within its depths. (VIDEO).
