The Kallaste sandstone outcrop is one of the most representative formations of the Middle Devonian Arukula deposit in Estonia. Here, in the central part of the deposit, fine-grained sandstone in shades of pink, yellow and reddish brown is exposed. It was this red sandstone that gave the village of Kallaste its Russian name, Krasnaya Gora - Red Hill. The Kallaste outcrop has long been known as a major site for fossilised Devonian fish: people have been uncovering the fossils of placoderms, acanthodes, jawless fish, lungfish and coelacanths here since the 19th century. The sandstone here formed some 350 million years ago, when the area was covered in a warm and relatively shallow sea. There are 11 outcrops along this one km stretch of the deposit, separated by fused sections. The average height of the outcrops is between 2 and 4 metres, with the highest being 9 meters. During the high water season, waves from the lake break on the cliffs, which has led to the formation of a large number of caves. There are at least nine caves which are at least 1.5 meters high, and they extend 6 meters into the rock face. The highest outcrop on the Kallaste bluff has been a nature conservation site since 1959. Today it forms part of the Kallaste special conservation area, which is designed to protect both the outcrops themselves and the habitat of the sand martin (Riparia riparia). This habitat was integrated into the Natura 2000 conservation area in 2004.
