WORD
The County of Gorizia, known in Italian as Contea di Gorizia, in German as Grafschaft Görz, in Slovene as Goriška grofija, and in Friulian as Contee di Gurize, existed as a State within the Holy Roman Empire. Originally overseeing territories as mediate Vogts of the Patriarchs of Aquileia, the Counts of Gorizia from the Meinhardiner family held control over various fiefs in the regions of Lienz and Friuli in northeastern Italy, establishing their seat of power in Gorizia (Görz). By 1253, the Counts of Gorizia inherited the County of Tyrol, leading to the Gorizia-Tyrol branch's rule from 1271. However, this branch ceased in the male line by 1335. Subsequently, a younger line governed the comital lands of Gorizia and Lienz until its end in 1500. Afterward, these territories were ultimately acquired by the Austrian House of Habsburg.
