For Catholics, the name Jerusalem had a different meaning. In the 1660s, in gratitude for the deliverance of Lithuania from Russian occupation, the local Catholic bishop set up a pathway of Via Dolorosa on a hilly, forested bank of the Neris River, north of the city. This Baroque replica of the Calvary became a major pilgrimage site in Lithuania, and had its imprint on local toponymy: a nearby brook was renamed Cedron and the neighbouring village acquired the name of Jerusalem, which is still used to this day.
