Zrze Monastery is situated in close proximity to the village of Zrze, approximately 25 kilometers to the northwest of Prilep in the Republic of North Macedonia. The area boasts a wealth of historical remnants from ancient times, including pillars, remnants of basilicas, and various artifacts, bearing testament to its rich cultural heritage. Traditionally, monks inhabited intricately carved stone hollows within the mountainside cliffs, a practice believed to have originated in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Presently, the Zrze monastery complex comprises the 'St. Petar and Pavle' church, lodging facilities, and several auxiliary rooms. Over the years, the church has undergone multiple renovations, with only fragments of its original artwork remaining. Notably, in the 14th century, the church walls were adorned with paintings of exceptional artistic significance. A particularly remarkable artifact housed within the Church of Saints Peter and Paul is the 1421 icon of the Holy Virgin Pelagonitissa, considered one of the last masterpieces of Byzantine iconography. Crafted by Makarije Zograf, this icon was created within the confines of the Zrze monastery. Makarije Zograf and his brother, Metropolitan Jovan Zograf, were entrusted with the care of the monastery's endowment until it was later transferred to Constantine, the village head (kmet). Beneath the monastery lie the cells of the monks, their substantial number indicative of the vibrant monastic community, which adhered to the highest monastic traditions. Today, Zrze remains a fully operational monastery, aligning with the beliefs of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
