Žiri, formerly known as Žir, locally called Žier, and historically known as Sairach in German, stands as a town situated in northwestern Slovenia. It serves as the administrative center of the Municipality of Žiri, established in 1994, having previously been a part of the Škofja Loka area administratively. Positioned in the extreme southwest of the Upper Carniola region, Žiri resides within the Žiri Basin (Slovene: Žirovska kotlina), bordering the Inner Carniola and Littoral regions at the terminus of the Poljane Valley (Poljanska dolina). Within this area, numerous tributaries converge to form the Poljane Sora (Poljanska Sora).
Located in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia, Žiri is a municipality covering an area of 7.87 km2 (3.04 sq mi) with an elevation of 478.7 m (1,570.5 ft). In 2020, it has a population of 3,657 residents.
The settlement's name, initially recorded as Syroch in 1291 and later as Seyroch in 1307 and Syroch in 1318, is likely derived from a plural form of the term *Žirъ, possibly signifying 'Žir and his people'. An alternative, less probable explanation associates it with the Slovene noun žir, meaning 'beech nuts'. In 1871, an Austrian post office was established in Žiri, operating under the name Sairach in the Loitsch (Logatec) district. The Slovene name was added to the postal designation toward the late 19th century. Within Žiri, the parish church, dedicated to Saint Martin, falls under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.
