Zaķusala (English: Hare Island) is one of several islands in the Daugava river in the central part of the city of Riga. The island, that we can see today, was formed only in the end of the 19th century. Before there were several other islands in this place, which merged to form the modern Zaķusala. Zaķusala's dimensions are constantly changing. In 1901 it was 1600 meters long and at its widest 280 meters wide, in 1988 the island was 3500 meters long and 100-300 meters wide.
