Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (Croatian: Zračna luka Franjo Tuđman Zagreb), also known as Zagreb Airport (Croatian: Zračna luka Zagreb) (IATA: ZAG, ICAO: LDZA), serves as an international gateway to Zagreb, Croatia. It holds the distinction of being the largest and busiest airport in Croatia, handling 3.72 million passengers and approximately 10,859 tons of cargo in 2023.
Named in honor of Franjo Tuđman, Croatia's first President, the airport is situated around 10 km (6.2 mi) southeast of Zagreb Central Station in Velika Gorica. It serves as the central hub for the Croatian flag carrier, Croatia Airlines, and is a focal city for Trade Air. Additionally, the Croatian Air Force maintains its main base on the airport premises, with the Croatian Air Traffic Control administration situated there as well.
The airport's history dates back to 1909 when the first airfield was established near the western city neighborhood of Črnomerec. Over the years, it underwent several relocations, with commercial services eventually settling in the current location at Pleso in 1962. Since then, the airport has witnessed numerous expansions and improvements, including the construction of a new terminal facility in 2016, designed to accommodate 5.5 million passengers annually in its initial phase.
In recent years, the airport has garnered international recognition, receiving the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Award in various categories, including Best Airport of 2 to 5 million Passengers in Europe, Airport with the Most Dedicated Staff in Europe, and Easiest Airport Journey in Europe for the year 2022. Additionally, Irish low-cost airline Ryanair announced plans to establish a new base at the airport in July 2021, introducing flights to 26 previously unserved destinations.
