Yongyeon pond is a small-sized pond that is located where the sea meets Hancheon Stream that crosses the center of Jeju-si north and south. The mouth of Hancheon Stream where the Yongyeon pond is attached became a deep valley after the hardened thick lava flow experienced erosion for a long time. As a result, on both sides of the bank, there are beautiful columnar joints that were created as the lava cooled down. From the past, the surroundings of the Yongyeon pond have been famous for Yongyeonyabeom, which is one of the 12 Scenic Sites of Yeongju (old name of Jeju Island). Yongyeonyabeom refers to boating at Yongyeon on summer nights. In the Joseon Dynasty period, the local governors and exiled people used to enjoy the arts at this place. Also, in the period of drought, people in the past used to hold a ritual for rain in this area.
