Wonju (원주시) is the most populous city in Gangwon province (332,849). The city is located approximately 140 kilometres (87 mi) east of Seoul. Wonju was the site of three crucial battles during the Korean War. Until 1946, it was a small town with a population of 20,000, and the Korean War destroyed most of the city. After that, the 1st Field Military Command , 1st Logistics Support Command , and Camp Long , the US military base, were stationed there, and it was quickly restored as a military city. It was promoted to a city on September 1, 1955. Wonju City is divided into 1 eup (town), 8 myeon (townships), and 16 dong (neighborhoods). There are several museums and cultural centers in the city of Wonju: Mureung Museum, Yonsei University Wonju Museum, Museum yetchaek towns, Wonju City Museum, Chiak Folk Museum, Myeongjusa Chiaksan and Engraving Museum, Toji Literature park, Toji Cultural Center, Hanji museum, On Museum of the Arts, Museum San.
