Uigeumbu was an investigative and enforcement agency of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was in charge of questioning the case of treason or interrogating criminals under the king's orders. Other names of the agency were Geumbu, Geumo, and Wangbu (the Ministry of the King). Unlike the laity who were interrogated and tortured at Podocheong or local police agencies, Catholic bishops, priests and other leaders were counted as serious criminals and transferred to Uigeumbu under the king's special orders. During the Sinhae Persecution (1791), Peter Yi Seung-hun, the first Korean baptist got arrested and interrogated at Uigeumbu, and during Sinyu Persecution (1801), Ambrosius Gwon Cheol-sin, Father James Zhou Wen-mo, and John Choe Chang-hyeon, the leader of lay faithful were interrogated and tortured at both Uigeumbu and Podocheong. During the Gihae Persecution (1839), Bishop Laurent Joseph Marie Imbert, Father Pierre-Philibert Maubant, Father Jacques Honor Chastan, and St. Paul Jeong Ha-sang also suffered from interrogation and torture. Following saints - Bishop Simeon-Francois Berneux, Father Simon Marie Antoine Just Ranfer de Bretenieres, Father Pierre Henri Dorie, Father Ludovicus Beaulieu, John Nam Jong-sam, John Jeon Jang-un, Peter Choe Hyeong and Marco Jeong Ui-bae - kept their strong faith while interrogated and tortured here at Uigeumbu during the Byeongin Persecution in 1866.
