Two accounts shed light on the battle that unfolded on July 2nd, 2021, at Diaca in Mocimboa da Praia district. The initial account, from a source closely tied to the government’s security operations in the town, depicted the insurgent assault as a serious endeavor to reclaim the town from government forces. Arriving in four vehicles, the insurgents were ultimately compelled to withdraw in the face of resistance from government troops. Tragically, at least one member of the Mozambican police force’s Rapid Intervention Unit lost their life during the attack. The second narrative, also sourced from the area, suggested that insurgents had seized two police armored personnel carriers during the assault. This assertion seemed to be validated by an Islamic State claim on July 13th regarding the attack. According to the Islamic State's statement, the group repelled an advancement by the Mozambican government along the critical road between Mocimboa da Praia and Mueda towns—a road on which Diaca holds significant strategic importance. They claimed the capture of two armored vehicles and four rifles. Accompanying photographs depicted two Chinese-made armored personnel carriers adorned with Mozambican police markings.
