Turtle ships were restored according to the records of structure and construction detail of the Geobukseon ship in Yi Chungmugong Jeonseo, biography of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, published by the Joseon Court in 1795. As seen in the figure, Jeonla Jwasuyeong Geobukseon turtle ship has turtle shell patterns on the armoured plates. The mouth of the dragon head attached at the bow of the vessel spit fumes which were produced by burning sulfur and gunpowder inside the dragon head. The fume effectively functioned as a smokescreen against the enemy forces. Tonjeyeong Geobukseon turtle ship protected the navy forces on board with several thick cover plates instead of turtle shell patterns. The height of the dragon head was lowered and installed at an angle to allow the cannon to be inserted and fired.
