This is the place where Ko Huidong (1886-1965), Korea's first artist of Western painting, lived for 41 years. He designed this hanok himself and built it in 1918 after he completed his studies in Japan. Ko Huidong is highly regarded as Korea's first artist of Western painting, an art educator who introduced new painting techniques, an art administrator who formed and led the art community, and a leader of the art movement in Korea. The house originally consisted of the Anchae (woman's quarter), the Sarangchae (master's quarter), servants' quarters and a storeroom. Having been remodeled several times and later neglected, the house eventually bore little resemblance to its original state and became derelict. After the house was designated as a registered cultural heritage property, the Anchae (women's quarter) and the Sarangchae (master's quarter) were repaired and restored. The Anchae (woman's quarter) facing east has seven bays along the front and two and half bays along the side, and the Sarangchae (master's quarter) is laid out in a U-shaped form, making the overall layout square-shaped. The long corridor and glass windows, the walkway-like floored space surrounding the building, the floored center hall, and the improved toilet of this house clearly show characteristics of Korean houses in early modern times.
