This archaeological structure forms an integral part of the fortifications in medieval Sozopol, serving as a safeguard for access to the outer harbor situated between the islands of 'St. Ivan' and 'St. St. Kirik and Julita.' It shields this access from the eastern threat posed by the submerged reef known as Palikari. The site, which boasts multiple historical layers, underwent extensive examination in 2012-2013. Among the significant findings:
1. The excavation unveiled the northern entrance of the fort, fortified on the western side by a tower of the 'bastion' type, along with a partially preserved section of the fortress wall. This gate facilitated entry to a small wooden scaffold built on the rocks, allowing ships to unload cargo during calm sea conditions.
2. Natural erosion and earthquakes have taken their toll on a substantial portion of the fortress wall east of cape Skamni, leading to its deterioration.
3. In the immediate vicinity, within the entrance area, a small necropolis dating from the 13th to 14th century AD was meticulously examined. Most of this burial site was located in the area between the 'Viyatarna melnitca' restaurant and the North Tower. It is believed to be associated with a medieval church located south of 'Morski skali' street.
