The White Mosque is considered a late 15th century construction, based on the travelogue of the Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi, attributed to the reign of Sultan Bayezid II. However, the preserved ruins inside the castle and the technique of their masonry, are mostly associated with late 18th century or early 19th century structures, suggesting a reconstruction of the mosque during the time of Albanian pashaliks. The mosque was ruined during the Ottoman attack of the castle of Berat, for the suppression of the revolts against the Tanzimat reforms. The mosque was a relatively modest size building, with a cubic prayer hall and a polygonal minaret. Its position inside the castle suggests that the mosque served the needs of the local rulers and troops garrisoned in the castle.
