The village of Rucava is located 44 km south of Liepāja, 8 km east of the Baltic Sea coast and only 4 km from the Lithuanian border. In historical documents, the name of Rucava is mentioned for the first time in the 1253 agreement on the division of Kursa between the Bishopric of Kurzeme and the Teutonic Order. Rucava was historically known as the settlement of Paurupe, and it developed as a village of craftsmen and traders 3 km from the center of Rucavas Manor (Rutzau), and at the beginning of the 17th century was already a significant settlement by the standards of that time. In 1925, Rucava was granted the status of a densely populated place (village). In Rucava there is a parish administration, post office, Rucava primary school, kindergarten, Lutheran and Baptist churches, tourist information center, culture house, and several guesthouses.
