Saint Ursula Roman Catholic Church - Sibiu

  • Sibiu

The Ursuline Church in Sibiu, located on Gheorghe Magheru Street, was originally constructed in the 15th century as a Roman Catholic church within the Dominican friars' monastery. Following the Protestant Reformation in 1543, Sibiu's Saxon population embraced Lutheranism, leading to the transition of Catholic churches to Lutheran ownership. In 1728, after Transylvania's liberation from Ottoman influence, the former Dominican monastery became home to Ursuline nuns. The church underwent significant renovations, transitioning from Gothic to style. The complex can be found at Str. General Gheorghe Magheru (formerly Sării) no. 34-36. Originally constructed in the Gothic architectural style, the church underwent a transformation into a Baroque structure. Despite this shift, certain Gothic elements endure, including buttresses, upper three-lobed windows, and a late Gothic portal on the western facade. Above the entrance portal on this facade, a statue of St. Ursula resides within a semicircular baroque niche, ornately decorated with shell motifs. Flanking the niche are Corinthian-columned consoles supporting a pediment adorned with floral friezes. St. Ursula's statue is placed on a baroque plinth, featuring a blue badge bearing her name. The interior is characterized by a Baroque church-hall design, while some Gothic features remain in a side chapel and the sacristy. Gothic vaults were replaced with a ceiling, except for the semi-cylindrical vault above the choir balcony.
