The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) is the resting place of UN forces who died in defense of freedom and peace during the Korean War (1950-1953). Originally established by the UN Command in April 1951, the responsibility for the maintenance of the cemetery was transferred to the United Nations in 1959, and then in 1974 to the Commission for the UNMCK, who oversees the cemetery in perpetuity, and is composed of the eleven countries whose nationals are interred here. The primary objective of the Commission and the other caretakers of the cemetery is to honor the service and sacrifice of the fallen, and we welcome people of all nations to join us in honoring the brave fallen who lie here. During the Korean War, twenty-two UN nations dispatched combat forces and/or medical unity. In all, nearly 41,000 of these UN troops sacrificed their lives in the conflict. This sacred ground is the resting place of 2,315 brave fallen from eleven nations.
