The unique yellow facade makes the Fico House easy to find. Built in 1902, this house serves as an example of the development of the traditional houses in Gjirokastra at the end of the 19th century. The overall organization of the interior spaces is like that of a typical Gjirokastra house, while the decoration of the interior and exterior is treated differently. The attic of the house is one of its most unique elements. It is located in the center of the house, on the top floor. The painted walls, decorated ceiling and natural light coming from the many windows creates a stunning atmosphere, which is unique in the city. There is only one house like Fico. It has been said that the use of the yellow colour indicates the family were wealthy.
'Passing through its streets, it seems that Gjirokastra is an old town, which, in comparison with the other cities, has kept its Albanian nature. It seems like a typical Albanian city because of its architecture and spirit.' Godart (1921)
The Fico family is one of the oldest and most famous in Gjirokastra. Their house was built towards the end of the 19th century and its yellow paintwork and elaborate carving make it unusual. During World War II the house was a base for local partisans and during Communist period, the Fico family was evicted and their home sub-divided into printing workshops and apartments. The family returned to their home in 1970. For eight generations members of the Fico family have had illustrious careers as advocates, doctors, engineers and politicians. Raul Fico (1881-1944) became Minister of the Interior in the first Albanian government in 1912. Another famous member of the family was Frederik Fico, a well respected doctor and sports commentator. Lule Fico, who married into the family at the age of 20, lives in the house now: 'I remember arriving and being overwhelmed by the size and grandeur of the house. My mother in law had to teach me how to cook all the Gjirokastrian dishes.'
