The town of Kamza (definite Albanian form), near Tirana in Albania, is thriving due to the money being sent home by its citizens living abroad. The town was initially a former slum that has been transformed by the residents themselves over the last decade, into the fastest growing city in Albania. Most of the town's population of around 250,000 would not exist if it was not for Albania's several-million-strong diaspora. Despite many towns and villages in Europe emptying as people emigrate, Kamza has prospered thanks to the money and expertise of its expatriate community. Many of the houses, businesses and infrastructure of Kamza are funded by money sent home by Albanians working abroad. The article analyzes the situation and presents the point of view of residents of the town.
