Tomb of King Muryeong

The Tomb of King Muryeong and His Queen is a brick tomb influenced by the burials of the Southern Dynasties of China. The tomb was discovered during drainage work for Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri in July 1971. Judging from the fact that it was built entirely with bricks, it is thought to have been influenced by the method of tomb construction used in the Southern Dynasties of China. The tomb consists of a rectangular floor, which is longer from north to south, an arched ceiling, and a corridor built in the south. Some 4,600 items of 108 different types were unearthed from the tomb, including golden crown accessories, golden chignon ornaments, memorial stones and stone statues in the form of animals. Of these, seventeen relics of twelve types have been designated as National Treasures, attesting to the excellent culture and arts of Baekje. The discovery of the Tomb of King Muryeong in July 1971 was a groundbreaking event that shed a brighter light on the history and culture of Baekje. The Tomb of King Muryeong is a brick tomb built in the style of the tombs of the ruling elite of Liang of the Southern Dynasties of China. This invaluable relic, along with the 4,600 artifacts discovered inside it, represents the essence of Baekje's spiritual and material culture. Above all, the discovery of the Buried Memorial Tablet inside the tomb proved that the occupant of the tomb was the twenty-fifth ruler of Baekje, King Muryeong. In fact, it is the only ancient tomb from the Three Kingdoms Period to contain a record about its occupant. In addition, the record about the dates of the king's death and burial is a useful material for research on the ancient history of Korea and East Asia. It also proves the accuracy of the information recorded in Samguk sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), and has contributed to revitalizing research on not only the history of Baekje but also on that of the Three Kingdoms Period. Furthermore, the style of the tomb and the excavated relics indicate the statues of Baekje in East Asia at that time, attesting to Baekje's active cultural exchanges with neighbouring countries and the excellence of its culture. This tomb of Baekje's King Muryeong r.501-523 and his queen consort was discovered in 1971 during the construction of drainage facilities for Songsan-ri Tombs No's 5 and 6. The tomb consists of a burial chamber built with bricks carved with a lotus motif, following the practice widely prevalent in the Liang Dynasty 502-557, one of the southern dynasties of China. The burial chamber is 4.2 meters long from south to north, 2.72 meters wide from east to west, and 2.93 meters high, and has several lamp niches and windows carved into the walls. The tomb marker discovered at the entrance to the passage leading to the burial chamber indicates for whom and when the tomb was built. As the only one of the Ancient Tombs in Songsan-ri to have been spared by looters, it has produced a wealth of valuable artifacts (about 4,600 items in 108 categories), including gold crown ornaments for the king and queen, and attests to the cultural greatness achieved by Baekje.
