The Szeged water tower (Víztorony), situated on Szent István Square, was constructed in 1904 under the guidance of Szilárd Zielinski. As a pioneer in reinforced concrete construction in Hungary, Zielinski designed this tower, the country's second of its kind. The tower's construction was skillfully executed by Henrik Freund and Sons, earning it recognition as a significant industrial heritage site in March 2003. This project was a remarkable and ambitious feat at the outset of the 20th century. In response to escalating water demand, the city opted to establish an extensive network of high and low-pressure water pipes. This initiative encompassed the water tower, supplied by three wooden-lined artesian wells. The Hungarian Royal National Water Works Directorate's Public Health Engineering Department orchestrated the water pipeline network's layout, ushering in a new era of water supply development for Szeged. The water tower has remained operational since 1904 and has been fortunate to endure over a century without war-related harm. Its core structure remained largely unaltered, apart from a significant façade renovation during 1959-60. However, an expert assessment of this monument, designated as unique in 2003, revealed that reconstruction was essential. The primary reasons were escalating concrete corrosion and long-standing corrosion affecting the steel components. Reconstruction efforts commenced in 2005 and successfully concluded in 2006. Concurrently, Szent István Square underwent a comprehensive revitalization as part of these restoration endeavors.
