The Stembridge School in Vilnius was created to provide education for Belarusian families fleeing repression. The founders, three Russian and two Belarusian businessmen linked to the cigarette and alcohol industries, have raised suspicions. The school charges high tuition fees, with an extra fee for extended classes. Another Stembridge School operates in Minsk, affiliated with a co-founder in Vilnius, who also has mediation connections in Belarus. An employee, Daiva Nurieva, reported unpaid wages and lack of official employment status and benefits. She lodged a complaint with the State Labour Inspectorate. The school's activities have attracted the attention of suspected Russian embassy representatives. The Lithuanian Ministry of Education identified violations but didn't sanction the school in its first year. The shareholders invested 75,000 euros. The school has declined to speak to journalists, raising further concerns.
