The small Cornino Lake lies at the foot of Monte Prat and its maximum depth is five to six meters. The water temperatures range from 9°C in winter to 11°C in summer. It is a relatively young lake (little more than 10,000 years), so it's being colonized by animals and plants. In the vicinity of the lake, the holly oak is present. Along the lake shores there is a belt of woods, made up by sessile oak, hornbeam, chestnut, common dogwood, manna ash and hazel trees; it hosts roa deer, hares and small rodents. Recently, the lake has been populated with fario brown trout, which make up the lake's fauna together with goby and freshwater crayfish. The sedentary birds include the little grebe, the common moorhen, the water rail, the little bittern, the dipper, the common kingfisher, the penduline tit, the mallard, the garganey, the prey heron. Many species of web-footed, migrating birds also appear. Since 1987, the area around the lake is part of a repopulation project concerning the griffon, whose purpose is reintroducing the species to the Eastern Alps.
