The Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies is a five-year institution in Pyongyang, North Korea, with a specialization in language education. The university originated as a separate entity from Kim Il-sung University in 1964, although North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency claims its foundation date as November 15, 1949. It is not as prestigious as Kim Il-sung University's foreign languages division, which primarily educates members of the political elite. Most of its graduates pursue careers as working-level diplomats or in the intelligence service. The university is organized into distinct colleges for English, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and an 'Ethnic Languages College' that provides instruction in 18 other languages, including French, Spanish, Arabic, Thai, Urdu, Khmer, Polish, and Italian (since July 2007). In total, PUFS offers courses in 22 languages, covering a wide range of linguistic studies. The university has been associated with notable individuals such as American defector Charles Robert Jenkins, James Dresnok, Ri Yong-ho, and Thae Yong-ho, who served in various capacities as students, faculty, or alumni.
