The Petar Kružić Stairway, also known as the Trsat Stairway (Croatian: Stube Petra Kružića), is a stone stairway in Rijeka, Croatia, connecting Rijeka to Trsat. It starts from the archway at the Eastern Bank of Rječina river and ascends to the Trsat settlement, situated on a plateau 138 meters above sea level. The stairway, consisting of 561 stone steps, was constructed for pilgrims on their way to the Church of Our Lady of Trsat. Its construction began in 1531 under the guidance of Croatian warlord captain Petar Kružić, who excelled in battles against the Turks. He built the lower part of the staircase leading to the Basilica of Notre-Dame of Trsat, which is now the Church of Our Lady of Trsat, dating back to the 15th century. One of the votive chapels along the stairway was created in the 15th century, and another was added in the 18th century. At the foot of the stairway leading to Trsat, there is a porch with a statue of 'Virgin with Child' dating from 1745. According to legend, the Franciscans made a deal with the Devil to build the stairway, but they outsmarted him by sending a goat to climb it instead of a human soul. The enraged Devil mixed the steps, making them uncountable. Over time, the stairway was extended from around a hundred steps to its current 561 steps. Climbing the Trsat steps during the Feast of the Assumption is a unique experience, and some pilgrims still practice the ancient votive tradition of climbing the steps on their knees.
