The People's square has been the central city square, together with important buildings of the municipal government, since the Middle Ages when it was known as Platea Magna (The Great Square). At present the northern part of the square is dominated by the artificial monumental building of the City Hall. It was built as a symbol of the Italian occupation during the thirties of the last century and its construction resulted in the destruction of the original buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Municipal Loggia was built in 1565 in the Renaissance style on the location of an earlier medieval loggia. Public services have been executed here for centuries. During the fifties it housed the city library and today it serves as an exhibition pavilion. The Municipal Guard (Gran Guardia) was erected some time before 1562 in the Late Renaissance style and is enclosed in the front by a stone fence with round openings for cannons. The design of both buildings is credited to the Venetian architect Gian Girolamo Sanmicheli. In 1798 the clock tower was built above the central part. The deconsecrated and partly destroyed Church of Saint Lawrence, from the first half of the 11th century, can be found slightly hidden behind the cafe in the western part of the square. The church is a valuable example of the transitional period from the pre-Romanesque and Byzantine towards the Romanesque style. The interior architectural features such as the cupola, the Romanesque nave and two aisles and its practically Romanesque sculpture decorations are all indications of this new style. The Ghirardini Palace is located to the northeast of the square. The sculptural ornament of the grand window in the Gothic-Renaissance style on the first floor is credited to the renowned artist of that time Nikola Firentinac (Niccolò di Giovanni).
