The name of Mount Malkalns (Clay Mount) stems from the fact that the soil at the base of the hill is very clayey. The mount (62 meters above sea level) offers a view of the town's lake and panorama. Until the First World War, at the site of Mount Malkalns there were fields of Aline Estate belonging to Durbe Manor. Now the hill is built up and connected to the town. At the top of Mount Malkalns there is a monument by sculptor Arta Dumpe, erected in 1975. Although its name is "Monument to the Liberators of Tukums" and it was dedicated to the soldiers of the Soviet Army, already at the moment of its creation the sculptor had another version in her mind: the monument was designed as a symbol of the Latvian force - an oak tree in the centre of which there is a mother holding her both sons who have fought on the opposite sides of the front. In 2010, celebrating the 77th birthday of Tukums countryman poet Imants Ziedonis, the first trees - 77 ornamental cherry trees - were planted. The top of Mount Malkalns opens a wide view of Slocene Valley and the town of Tukums with its historic centre on the other side of the valley. It is especially beautiful in evening twilight and at night when the lights in the streets and houses of the town are all lit.
