The Mausoleum of Martyrs in Durrës serves as a memorial to the Second World War dead and those who perished in Nazi concentration camps. Architect Kristo Sotiri (1870–1953) created the mausoleum. The construction began in 1947. It is Albania's first and only mausoleum of its kind. The 'Martyrs' Mausoleum' complex has an arc-shaped layout. The mausoleum building, the staircase, and the flower garden make up its three main components. In particular niches or chambers, the martyrs' remains are buried. For those who died in the Nazi concentration camps, memorial graves - graves without bones - were used. On two slabs of marble, the names of those who were interned in Nazi concentration camps are written in bronze letters.
