The Kluže Fortress, situated near the town of Bovec in northwestern Slovenia, holds historical significance. Initially erected in 1472 close to Bovec on the route connecting Cave del Predil and Carinthia, its primary purpose was to safeguard Friuli against potential Turkish threats. Throughout the 16th century, the authority over Bovec shifted to Austria due to conflicts between Venice and the Habsburgs. Despite this, it retained its ecclesiastical connection to Cividale and Aquileia. Eventually, in the late 18th century, Bovec was fully under Austrian control, maintaining this status until 1918. In the years 1796 and 1797, the fortress witnessed conflict as Napoleon's forces advanced through the Koritnica gorge. Napoleon's troops managed to capture the fort in 1797 by employing artillery positioned at higher ground, where Fort Hermann stands today. Consequently, the original fortress was destroyed. Subsequently, the current fort was constructed on the same site during the late 19th century. Concurrently, Fort Hermann, situated on higher terrain, was also erected. A pathway and tunnel connect these two forts. Unfortunately, Fort Hermann sustained substantial damage during World War I due to Italian artillery bombardment in 1915. The year 1903 witnessed a significant fire that devastated a portion of Bovec. What remained after the fire was further ravaged during World War I, when the Italian-Austrian front, known as the Battles of the Isonzo, traversed through the valley, cutting a path from north to south.
