The Humor Monastery is situated in Mănăstirea Humorului, approximately 5 km north of Gura Humorului, Romania. Dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos), it was established in 1530 by Voievod Petru Rareş and Teodor Bubuiog. The current monastery was built upon the foundation of a previous one from around 1415. After being closed in 1786, the Humor Monastery was reopened in 1990. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites list includes the Humor Monastery as part of the Painted churches of Moldavia. Frescoes adorn the walls of the Humor Monastery, making it one of the earliest in Moldavia to feature such artwork. Alongside Voroneţ, Humor boasts some of the best-preserved frescoes, characterized by a reddish-brown hue. The frescoes were painted by Toma of Suceava in 1535. The frescoes at Humor encompass themes like the Siege of Constantinople and the Last Judgment, which are commonly found on the exteriors of Bucovina's painted monasteries. Additionally, there is the Hymn to the Virgin, inspired by the poem of Patriarch Sergius of Constantinople. This hymn relates to the miraculous intervention of the Theotokos in saving Constantinople from Persian conquest in 626. Notably, the Persians are depicted as Turks, a prevalent technique in these monasteries where paintings served both spiritual and political purposes.
