Great Mosque Durrës

  • Durrës

The Great Mosque was built in 1938, and it occupies a central place among the architectural works of this period in Durrës. The selected topographic position with east facing facade, completes the other public buildings ensemble on the central square of the city. The mosque is distinguished by its large size with environments which are appropriate for ritual practice. The movement against 'religion, religious prejudices and backward behaviors' of February 6, 1967, destroyed the dome and its minaret, and transformed it into a cultural institution, named 'Youth Palace'. After the 1990s, with the establishment of the democratic system, the Great Mosque returned to its function as a cult building by preserving its original architecture. It was rebuilt in two phases, during the early years 1992-1994, and later on in 2004-2006.
